Back in 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend, the pioneering aviator Albert Santos Dumont. It was the first true wristwatch designed for men, and the modern range of Cartier Santos Dumont watches draws upon the heritage of that original piece to create a timepiece that’s perfect for the modern horological connoisseur.
The Santos de Cartier is an exquisite timepiece with a strong sense of history. The original piece was created by Louis Cartier for his friend, the famed Brazilian aviation pioneer Albert Santos Dumont, who wished to know the time in flight without having to fumble for his pocket watch. Thus, Cartier designed a piece especially for him. It was the first true gent’s wristwatch – as wristwatches were at the time designed only for ladies – and set a style standard for many years to come.
Because Cartier promised Santos that his watch would be exclusive, it wasn’t until 1911 that the range of Cartier Santos watches was launched for public purchase – but it found instant popularity, and quickly became an iconic piece, as it remains to this day.
Today, the Santos de Cartier range encompasses a number of collections, including the Cartier Santos Demoiselle, Cartier Santos-Dumont and Santos 100.
Each piece within the wider range of Cartier Santos mens and ladies watches offers a clear square face with attractive rounded edges and large Roman numerals for easy readability. One of the pioneering features of this design is the fact that the case incorporates the lugs seamlessly, without attachments or pins; being devised as a single piece made the watch more secure upon the wrist. In this way, the Santos de Cartier combines the brand’s trademark luxury with an enviable practicality.

Your Cartier warranty covers a range of defects, but only if found to be defective due to a manufacturing fault. If this is the case, the watch can be repaired or replaced completely free. As standard, this warranty is 2 years for all Cartier models. However, if you register your watch with Cartier Care after purchase, you will benefit from 8 years of warranty.
There are many advantages to extending your warranty, including:
It also includes technical diagnostics and advice, should you need it. This technical diagnostic involves inspections to check precision, amplitude, and water resistance, for example, which makes sure that the watch is working optimally. The registration process is straightforward and will only take a few minutes of your time. Importantly, this registration is entirely free and does not require you to sign up for any additional services or make any payments. It is simply a way to enhance the protection of the watch you already own.
If you are struggling to register your watch or would like more information about the warranty of your timepiece, we are more than happy to help. We work closely with Cartier, and our team are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with this luxury watchmaker.
In short, yes. At Banks Lyon, we offer Cartier watches with 0% finance, which gives you the freedom to pay for your timepiece in monthly instalments. Our flexible and straightforward approach means you can spread the cost of some Santos de Cartier watches from six months all the way up to five years. Many customers prefer this option as it means they can start wearing and enjoying their timepieces right away, even if they do not have the funds available to pay for the entire cost upfront.
Our financing options are easy to follow and easy to use due to our finance calculator. Simply select the duration for which you wish to spread the cost, choose your deposit amount (from 10% to 50%), and discover what your monthly instalments will be.
Please note that financing a Cartier timepiece is subject to status and is only available for watches between £500 and £20,000. You must read the financing descriptions on the product page of your chosen timepiece to find out what is available.
Santos de Cartier watches are available in both automatic and quartz models. Automatic, or self-winding, watches are powered by a spring that is wound when the watch moves, whereas quartz movements are powered by a battery. When it comes to choosing the best mechanism for you, there are a few elements to consider. For example, if you wait for several months in between wearing an automatic watch, you may find that it is slightly less accurate due to the lack of power being supplied to the timepiece. If this is the case, or you discover that your Santos de Cartier watch is too fast, slow, or has stopped, you must book a watch service with the Cartier experts here at Banks Lyon.
We are thrilled to offer a wide range of both quartz and automatic Santos de Cartier watches.Once you have decided on the best option for you, explore our range online or visit us in-store, where we can help you select the best model.
The Santos de Cartier watch is iconic for several reasons. The watchmakers introduced the range in 1904 and based the designs on minimalism and an eye for detail. This combination brought to life a collection that features watches with iconic square dials and rounded corners paired with visible screws around the casing.
It was also the first Cartier watch to have a skeleton variation. A skeleton watch works just like a standard timepiece, but all its mechanical parts are visible, whether on the front of the dial or the back of the casing. In 2009, Cartier made the leap to include this interesting design choice in its watches, and the Santos de Cartier collection was chosen to pioneer this.
In addition, some Santos de Cartier models come with interchangeable strap options, giving wearers the option to switch up their style and enjoy some variety between metal and leather bracelets. Changing the strap is simple:
If you are having trouble with switching your strap or the button or casing is broken, please get in touch with our team. We can advise on the solution, whether we help you change the bracelet or suggest you book a watch repair.
