Making a Statement With Diamond Pendants

There’s nothing more vital than getting the right look when you want to make a statement at a big event. Choosing the right outfit is not just about the clothes but also about the accessories you pair with them. Diamond pendants and necklaces have been helping wearers make a statement since they came into fashion and continue to make a lasting impression to this day.

Pendants through the years

Necklaces and pendants have been an item of decoration for many years. The first necklace dates back to around 40,000BC and was created using wood, stones, bones and shells. Eventually, beads became popular with both men and women, which paved the way for popular pearl necklaces.

There are records of diamond jewellery dating back to the 1500s when Andrew I of Hungry gave his queen a crown set with rough-cut diamonds. However, diamond necklaces are thought to have taken a while to come into style.

Diamond Necklaces had a resurgence of popularity during the end of the Art Nouveau period thanks to connections to King Edward VII and his wife, Queen Alexandra. They have always been reserved for high society and royalty, which is what makes them such a statement piece. There have even been famous diamonds set into stunning necklaces, which only adds to their association with the upper classes.

Famous Diamond Pendants

One of the earliest stories of necklaces adorned with diamonds is from the 1700s and involves Napoleon Bonaparte gifting a diamond necklace to his wife, Marie-Louise, upon the birth of their son. This piece, known as the Napoleon Diamond Necklace, is now part of a collection on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. The original design, created by Etienne Nitot and Sons of Paris, offered a stunning piece made from 234 diamonds.

The Hope Diamond didn’t become the feature of a necklace for nearly 300 years after its records began. The stone was passed between a series of wealthy owners from 1668 and set within various pieces, when finally, sometime between 1911 and 1947, it became a pendant. The magnificent piece now also sits on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Another famous necklace was the Taylor-Burton Diamond, a beautiful 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond which was the focal point of the magnificent necklace Elizabeth Taylor wore to the 1970 Oscars Ball. The diamond was sold in 1979 after Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor divorced. It’s not known where the necklace is today, but we suspect it will make an appearance again as it is such a beautiful piece.

Of course, the above necklaces would undoubtedly create the wow factor when entering any event; however, with their values estimated between $5 million and $350 million, you may be looking for something a little more affordable.
