Pear-Cut Diamond Rings: A Flattering and Brilliant Cut

The origin of pear-cut diamonds can be traced all the way back to the 1400s, where diamond cutter and polisher Lodewyk van Berquem created the first of its kind using a polishing machine known as the ‘Scaif’ – which is still used today by diamond cutters. At the time, this was known as the pendeloque diamond, and since then has been worn by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Queen Elizabeth II. The iconic teardrop shape of a pear-cut diamond creates a multitude of angles within the stone, allowing light to reflect from it from every direction. This is what gives the pear-cut diamond its brilliance, and it is a perfect choice for those who desire a ring that will truly dazzle in the sunlight.

Pear-cut diamonds have between 56 and 58 facets, giving the diamond plenty of opportunity to sparkle. Due to their elongated design, they can help the finger to appear slimmer and longer than it actually is, making it a desirable cut for many engagement rings. Pear-cut diamonds are available in a variety of settings and band types, including lab-grown options. Lab-grown pear-cut diamond rings have the same composition and properties as a natural diamond but are a more sustainable and ethical choice of stone.

Diamond Varieties

Pear-cut diamond rings come in a selection of clarities, colours, and carats, and we have a range of rings to suit different styles, budgets and preferences.

  • Clarity: Clarity refers to any internal imperfections that impact a diamond’s appearance and is graded using the GIA International Diamond Grading System. When you see terms like VS1 (very slightly included) or VS2 on our listings, these indicate the clarity grade of the diamond.
  • Colour: This is rated on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Diamonds closer to the D end of this scale tend to retail for a higher price, depending on the clarity and number of carats.
  • Carats: Carats measure the weight of the diamond, and are a key determining factor in its price. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams, so diamonds of one carat and above are more valuable.

What are the Different Settings for Pear-Cut Rings?

Pear-cut rings have a unique asymmetrical shape that makes them a standout diamond choice for any setting. Here are some of the pear-cut diamond ring settings we offer:

  • Three Stone: Three Stone rings typically feature a large central diamond alongside two smaller ones on each side. With a pear-cut diamond, they can either be placed in the central position, or a popular design is to have them placed horizontally on the band, with a different diamond-cut as the focal point. Three Stone rings are often interpreted to represent the past, present, and future through the form of the three rings, giving them additional sentimental value.
  • Halo: One of the most popular settings for pear-cut diamonds, is the halo setting. Halo settings feature a frame of smaller diamonds surrounding the central diamond giving the stone extra sparkle and depth while also creating the illusion of a larger stone. For pear-cut diamonds this helps in terms of practicality as the protective halo layer prevents the sharp edges of the stone from getting easily caught.
  • Diamond Shoulder: Diamond shoulders are often paired with other ring settings, like a halo or solitaire, to add extra sparkle with additional stones. A series of small diamonds are set along the band, surrounding the central diamond and amplifying the overall beauty of the ring.
  • Dress Rings: Dress rings are ideal for those seeking a luxurious, non-traditional look with multiple diamonds. These rings often showcase diamonds in various cuts, adding extra visual appeal and depth to the design.

Our pear-cut rings come in a range of setting options, with bands available in 18ct Yellow Gold, 18ct White Gold, and Platinum. The choice of metal and setting should align with your personal preferences, and we recommend visiting our store to explore our collection in person, so you can fully appreciate the variety of designs on offer.
