Omega Ambassador Rory Mcllroy Triumphs at British Open

This weekend, Omega ambassador Rory Mcllroy strengthened his credentials as one of the brightest stars ever to shine in the world of golf by winning his third major title at the British Open. Having lead during every round of the competition, and posting two eagles in the last three holes of a dazzling third round, Mcllroy took a six-stroke lead into the final 18 holes of the tournament, and held himself together to coast home with aplomb, finishing two shots ahead of fellow Omega ambassador Sergio Garcia.

In view of previously winning the US Open and the PGA, Mcllroy now stands on the cusp of completing golf’s career Grand Slam. Still only 25, Mcllroy now only needs the Masters to rank alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, and he already compares well to these two legends, having won the first three legs of the career Grand Slam at such a young age. The Masters may not be taking place until April, but the build-up to this potentially momentous moment in the golfing calendar is already generating huge discussion.

As mentioned, Mcllroy is a brand ambassador for Omega watches, and renewed his contract with this celebrated watchmaker in June to continue what has already been a lucrative partnership. Golf has formed an integral part of Omega’s brand strategy for a number of years, and the brand has already secured the status as an Official Timekeeper for golf when it returns to the Olympic Games in 2016. Associated with many of golf’s premier events, Omega’s golfing involvement continues to gather pace, and they are doubtless delighted to have forged an alliance with a talent like Mcllroy.

Having finally held aloft the prestigious Claret Jug on Sunday, Mcllroy made sure to wear his Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra timepiece in time for the photos, and one can certainly see why, as even when compared to such an impressive trophy this classic chronometer was far from overshadowed. Boasting a striking blue dial with Omega’s signature ‘teak concept’ detailing – a maritime inspired aesthetic that has become rather synonymous with the Aqua Terra – this timepiece also benefits from a co-axial movement; one of the finest mechanisms to grace the horological world.

Omega have frequently expressed their enthusiasm when it comes to working alongside Mcllroy, who they see as golf’s ‘most exciting player’, and it is perhaps fitting that Mcllroy has adopted this Aqua Terra watch as his chosen timepiece, as it represents some of the most exciting developments to have come from Omega’s storied history. Indeed, Mcllroy’s endorsement is probably set to make this family of watches even more influential than they already are, and you can choose from a comprehensive selection of these exact watches right here at Banks Lyon.
