A Watch for World Travel: Bremont Extend the Z Series

As announced earlier this year at Baselworld, Bremont have extended their Z series with a new chronometer, the Bremont ALT1-ZT. This exciting new piece is expected to ship early next month, so it is an opportune moment to look at it in further detail.

The original ALT1-Z watch is an iconic Bremont timepiece which was part of the original launch collection in 2007. In keeping with Bremont’s passion for aviation, it was designed with the needs of aviators and world travellers in mind, allowing them to display both local time and the world standard time – Zulu time, the Z in the Z series.

In aviation, military and maritime applications, as well as communications and other activities which span multiple time zones, it is necessary to use a global standard time to avoid confusion. When first established, the global standard was Greenwich Mean Time, with each following time zone identified by successive letters. The originating point – Greenwich – was identified by the letter Z, as the offset here was zero hours from the standard. Due to the NATO phonetic alphabet’s use of “Zulu” to represent the letter Z, it became known in many circles, particularly in aviation, as Zulu time. Today, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) has taken over from Greenwich Mean Time as the global standard, but for many it is still Zulu time.

Alongside its popularity in aviation and military circles, the ALT1-Z is a reliable companion to adventurers such as Charley Boorman, famous for his 19,000 mile motorcycle journey with Ewan McGregor in the documentary Long Way Around.

The new ALT1-ZT maintains the practicality of the original piece, with a simplified design that allows for greater detail. It boasts a cleaner dial with new applied SuperLumiNova® index markers, with the 24 hr function moved to the bezel for greater clarity.  To give the dial more depth, there is a greater detailing around the stepped sub dials with micro lines.

The same hand design seen in the Bremont Martin Baker series, including the second time zone marker which has proven effective on the MBIII, has been applied to the ALT1-ZT to improve clarity even further.

Functionally, the GMT hand, combined with chronograph functionality to measure seconds, minutes and hours, mean that this is an ideal model for travel, allowing the wearer to keep track of time anywhere in the world.

In keeping with Bremont’s core range, the ALT1-ZT has a stainless steel case made to a hardness of 2000 Vickers – seven times that of an average stainless steel watch case – to ensure that it can withstand the rigours of any globetrotter’s itinerary. The convex sapphire crystal has nine layers of anti-reflective coating applied to both sides of the glass to ensure legibility, and the piece naturally has Bremont’s trademark attention to details and high standard of finish throughout.

Retailing at £4,795, the Bremont ALT1-ZT Chronometer watch is a highly anticipated piece which is expected to be just as popular as the original classic timepiece.
