At the end of November, the Chopard L.U.C Perpetual T was crowned the winner of this prestigious award, topping 00/24 Watch World’s ‘£100,000 and up’ category. These awards are only in their third edition, but they’ve quickly become recognised as a premier accolade for watchmaking brands to receive, and Chopard has accepted the award with enthusiasm. What was it about the L.U.C that proved to be so popular? It was unveiled in 2013 at Baselworld, so it’s not exactly the most recently introduced timepiece, but clearly it has made a lasting impression with horological connoisseurs.
This chronometer has been chosen as the winner due to a complex array of complications, including –among other things – a perpetual calendar, a tourbillon and a power reserve of 216 hours. This means that the wristwatch can remain entirely autonomous for more than a week, which is an exceptional capability even within the high-powered world of luxury watches. Such standards of performance are made possible by the inclusion of four spring barrels, and the wristwatch doesn’t fall down in terms of aesthetics either. ‘The carefully balanced’ dial was a particular favourite with the jury, as it would have been all too easy to make such a timepiece appear unseemly or cluttered.
We can definitely see why this Chopard L.U.C has caused such a stir at this year’s Watch World awards, but at upwards of £100,000, it’s not exactly all that accessible.
