Gents Watch of the Week: Cartier Tank MC Steel Automatic Watch

The classic Tank from Cartier is undoubtedly one of the most iconic of dress watches, and the Cartier Tank MC steel automatic watch only continues this highest of standards still further. One of the latest models in a range of watches that can truly be considered to be ageless, Cartier Tank watches have served alongside some of the most recognised individuals in the world since the years of the First World War.

The original Tank watch was fashioned by Louis Cartier in 1917, drawing inspiration from Renault’s sharply peaked battle tanks as they stormed across the western front, and the Tank MC represents a indisputable collector’s piece. The timepiece boldly displays a larger, sturdier case design, and the dual juxtaposition of the brash square face and the understated seconds counter certainly serve to lend this wristwatch an heir of finely honed strength. The 34 mm case is still not unduly large for a man’s watch, and yet this 9.5 mm thick watch manages to convey the same presence as a far larger timepiece. The case size also allows the watch to fit smoothly beneath the cuff of a shirt, making the Tank MC a watch for every occasion.

The automatic winding Cartier calibre 1904 movement within the Tank MC is clearly visible through the back of the transparent sapphire case back, creating a striking visual display as the circular movement is framed by the square steel case. Even the crown on this timepiece is designed to impress, with a refined octagonal aesthetic and a synthetic spinal that stands up to the very highest levels of scrutiny. Thanks to the 30 metre water resistance and 2 year warranty, it is also well shielded from the bulk of everyday incidents, and it also possesses a power reserve of 48 hours to provide premier levels of service for as long as possible.

The Tank MC’s black flinqué dial displays the classic roman numerals that are typically used by Cartier, and the angular intensity expressed by these numerals contrasts well with the slight curves of the reworked casing. The sword shaped Cartier hands are particularly apt due to the military inspirations behind this wristwatch, and each has been honed to a finely tapered edge. All of the details of the dial, including the calendar aperture at 3 o’clock, are clearly visible under the glossy crystal of the Tank MC, and the differing visuals created by Cartier ensure that this clarity remains regardless of the circumstances.

The black alligator strap of this Tank MC provides a powerful finish to this proud member of Cartier’s long standing collection, although a whole array of other designs are also available for those who are looking to achieve a personal touch. A cream coloured dial can be chosen with this particular model, whilst an opulent rose gold case can be combined with a cream or chocolate coloured dial. All of the dial choices conform to the guilloché aesthetic that Cartier has now become synonymous with, and the intricacy of the engraving on each of these cases is genuinely remarkable.
