Gents Watch of the Week: TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Watch

For our third Gents Watch of the Week we are very happy to bring you the striking TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Watch. Unveiled at this year’s Baselworld Watch Fair, the Formula 1 Automatic boasts a vibrant, high contrast black and orange colour scheme that makes this watch, more than most, truly stand out from the crowd.

TAG Heuer’s commitment to speed is nowhere more pronounced than in their Formula 1 series, and this is conspicuously upheld by the Formula 1 Automatic. Powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre 16 automatic chronograph movement, the 44mm case displays a clear, high contrast face with three dials, graded baton numerals and sword-bladed dials inside a TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Watchdark orange flange. The dials are at the 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions, with the numeric date aperture at 3 o’clock. The Black titanium carbide coated steel complete with a brushed black ceramic is what gives the Formula 1 its sleek but imposing presence, complemented by an unfussy and minimalist black rubber strap, recalling the aerodynamic design of a racing car.

The Formula 1 was originally inspired by the extreme performance of the McLaren Formula 1 Team, and TAG Heuer’s dedication to excellence is exemplified in the new cutting-edge ceramic material developed specifically for the TAG Heuer Formula 1 range. With the Formula 1 Automatic, TAG Heuer have created a watch that operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour for unparalleled accuracy of timing that, with the automatic calibre, will never need adjusting in the watch’s lifetime.

In TAG Heuer’s own words, the Formula 1 is always elegant, always masculine, and this in part mirrors their watch making ethos. All TAG Heuer watches are rigorously stress-tested under intense conditions before they are released, including water resistance (the Formula 1 is resistant to 200m), strap traction resistance and vibration resistance.

TAG Heuer began life as “Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG” (Heuer Watchmaking Inc) in 1860 in Switzerland when it was founded by Edouard Heuer. He released his first wristwatch in 1914, but it was during the Second World War when the boom really began for the company, making chronographs for the German Luftwaffe. It wasn’t until 1985 that Heuer was acquired by Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG) to become TAG Heuer as we understand the brand today. Over their illustrious history TAG Heuer have become a by-product for masculine sophistication, and the Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch collection continues that trend.

The Formula 1 Automatic is available at Banks Lyon today, hot from Baselworld 2013. Available for just a 10% deposit and 24 monthly payments of £73.12 with 0% finance, this is an extraordinary luxury watch that can be yours for well under £20 a week!
