James Bond Returns – 24th Film Announced as ‘Spectre’

It’s been a long time coming, but today finally brought the long-awaited details that everyone has been waiting for; the 24th film in the James Bond franchise has been confirmed for release on the 23rd October 2015, and it will carry the title of Spectre. On the one hand, this rather ‘un-Bondian’ branding may take some fans of the popular spy series a while to get used to, but anyone who is immersed in James Bond lore will recognise the moniker as a reference to the crime syndicate from many of the early Bond movies, leaving the world in no doubt as to the direction that the plotline is heading.

Alongside the title, a number of other revelations have been unveiled. Quite naturally, Daniel Craig is back on board for what will be his fourth outing as the iconic British secret agent, whilst a number of other established Bond names like Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Rory Kinnear and Ben Wishaw have also been confirmed. Joining them are brand new ‘Bond girls’ Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux, Sherlock star Andrew Lee Scott and professional wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista. Also being introduced (or possibly reintroduced…) in Spectre is Oscar winner Christoph Waltz’s character ‘Oberhauser’, and it is this announcement that is perhaps the most hotly debated at present.

In early Bond titles, Spectre served as a regular source of opposition for Britain’s most famous MI6 operative, and it also provided the back-story for the most famous Bond villain of all; the chilling Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Blofeld headed this ruthless criminal organisation throughout all of the 1960s Bond movies, and, if popular speculation is to be believed, Waltz’s character will be revealed as Blofeld during the course of the forthcoming film. The news that the peerless Aston Martin DB10 is joining the Spectre cast will doubtless be welcome too, but at Banks Lyon, we’re already wondering about another piece of technological assistance…what wristwatch will be gracing Craig’s wrist this time?

Timepieces have been an integral part of James Bond’s arsenal throughout the history of the films, and for the last two decades it is luxury horological brand Omega that has been squarely in the corner of MI6’s finest. Pierce Brosnan was the first Bond to sport an Omega watch in the 1995 classic GoldenEye, wearing a Seamaster Professional, and indeed it’s the Omega Seamaster that has been the mainstay for Bond ever since. The Seamaster 300M served its time within multiple Bond outings, and in the most recent entries to the franchise it’s the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M that has taken centre stage, with an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra being glimpsed in 2012’s Skyfall as well.

With the build-up to Bond 24 now well and truly underway – there’s less than one year to release after all – the speculation over what the next ‘Bond watch’ could be will doubtless continue, and we very much hope that the details will come to light very soon. In the meantime though, you can peruse a wide variety of Bond-esque watches in collections such as our Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean family, and even find the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Mid-Size Chronometer watch – the exact match for one of the two Skyfall timepieces – in store as well. If you’d like to find out more about any of these Omega watches, please be sure to give our friendly staff team a call on 01524 38 48 58 or email [email protected] and we’ll be more than happy to assist you.
