Luxury Watches in 2014: What Can We Expect?

Following on from our previous post that looked back over two of the most popular watches from 2013, it is now the time to look ahead to the predicted watch trends for 2014. The two watches in question were the Omega Speedmaster Darkside of the Moon and the Rolex GMT Master II, and both of these superb horological instruments perfectly encompassed all of the prevailing preferences for watchmaking sophistication, innovation, tradition and sporting excellence. As mentioned in our earlier study, it is entirely expected that we shall see these qualities persist over the coming year, but can we also expect to observe anything more unexpected emerging?

One might think that the exclusive and somewhat specialist market for luxury Swiss watches would exclude sharp fluctuations with regards to styles and trends, but history has shown that this is not the case. The last few years have seen a high degree of progression towards aesthetics of a rather ‘middle ground’ appearance. Dials that are highly cluttered with brash augmentations are in far less demand than they used to be, as too are the ultra-minimalist timepieces that once made up much of the market. Currently, a balanced visual theme is the optimal choice, another statement typified by our aforementioned Omega and Rolex timepieces, and one can expect to see this harmony continue to be refined over 2014.

In the last horological decade ostentation was extremely popular within many luxury wristwatches, whilst the current inclination is leading us towards a notably simpler aesthetic. However, this shift is not a move towards austerity, but rather towards sensibility. Whilst dials do tend to contain less that they did a matter of years ago, more ‘practical’ designs are being embraced with greater regularity. For example, many watches that use flat satin-finished dials now offset this lack of complexity by using heavier, more textured numerals or hour markers. Omega Aqua Terra watches are among the finest examples of this. Ultimately, the modern desire craves a sleek and stylish timepiece that can be readily worn whatever the occasion; and thus overly brazen or nondescript style decisions find themselves largely expelled.

For 2014 then, we can expect the solidification of these existing movements in watchmaking style. Developments will no doubt continue to be painstakingly honed into ever more luxuriant forms, whilst the penchant for peerlessly crafted details will undoubtedly continue to evolve. Because of this, we can expect those families of wristwatches that have recently been garnering widespread acclaim, such as Bremont watches, to consistently gather pace in terms of appeal. We do not yet know what new watches will be unveiled at premier events such as Baselworld 2014, but we certainly await their arrival with anticipation.

Whatever transpires, you can expect the matchless collection of luxury watches here at Banks Lyon to contain each and every timepiece of merit.
