The History of Deakin & Francis
As it is a milestone in their history, it is fitting to talk about how the family-run business started out and how they have developed over the centuries. Currently, brothers James and Henry Deakin are the seventh generation of the family to manage Deakin & Francis. But what about Francis?
In 1789, the firm was founded by Benjamin Woolfield. He was later joined by Charles Washington Shirley Deakin who was then, in turn, joined by C.W.B More whence they started to trade as Deakin and Moore. After Moore’s retirement, Charles’ nephew, Stephen Deakin, joined and the firm then became Deakin and Nephew for two years.
When Charles Deakin retired, Stephen was joined by his brother-in-law, John J Francis, where the name changed to what it is today, Deakin & Francis. Unfortunately, the Francis line ceased with the death of John Francis in the First World War, but the business has remained the same – even the building that they manufacture in, that was originally owned by James Watt, the father of the Industrial Revolution.
All of the cufflinks mentioned and the vast selection that we offer at Banks Lyon are a true testament to the dedication, craftsmanship and consideration of Deakin & Francis. As they say themselves, “let your cufflinks do the talking”.
