TAG Heuer and the Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is renowned as being one of the most prestigious motor races in the entire world, and it is a highly anticipated part of the Formula One calendar each and every year. First being held in 1929, this 161 mile race winds through 78 laps within the narrow streets of Monaco itself, and it is this unique situation that has made it into one of the most formidable tests of any F1 driver’s aptitude.

This year’s race was the latest chapter in an enthralling F1 season that has seen Mercedes dominate all proceedings thus far. British driver Lewis Hamilton has been the stand-out driver of 2014, and his only rival to this point has been his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg (see right), who began Sunday’s Grand Prix de Monaco in pole-position thanks to a controversial skid on Saturday that potentially blocked Hamilton from overtaking him.

Regardless of the validity of this incident – and it has already passed rigorous investigations by officials at the Monaco Grand Prix – the race was ultimately won by Rosberg, giving him a sorely needed victory as he seeks to hold off Hamilton’s challenge. Hamilton himself still reached the podium in second place, whilst the third place spot went to Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo, with current World Champion Sebastian Vettel being forced to retire with power unit deficiencies.

Swiss horological brand TAG Heuer has been the official partner of the Monaco Grand Prix with Automobile Club of Monaco (ACM) ever since 2011, although their association with this racing spectacle – and indeed F1 as a whole – actually dates back to many years before this formal alliance was forged. TAG Heuer served as the official F1 timekeeper for more than a decade, and was the first watch brand to partner both a professional driver and a Grand Prix team, so their legacy has been entwined with Formula One for a number of successful years.

As displayed by their annual VIP party before the commencing of the latest Grand Prix de Monaco, TAG Heuer still venerates this event within the inner circle of their many collaborations, but nothing displays this special relationship more than their continuingly evolving range of TAG Heuer watches; especially the Monaco range itself. These premium timepieces have been honouring the Monaco Grand Prix since 1969, and at their inception represented the first time that a square watch had ever been waterproofed, and also the very first automatic chronograph.

Two new limited edition watches (see above) have been unveiled by TAG Heuer in honour of this year’s Grand Prix de Monaco already, but the spirit of Monaco imbues a huge number of watches within their wider range as well. For example, our very own TAG Heuer Carrera Monaco Automatic watch (see right, and retailing for £4,095 or 36 monthly payments of £91 and a 20% deposit) was created to celebrate the partnership between these giants within the world of horology and motorsports, and this gloriously sleek wristwatch includes a number of aesthetic nods to the race event; most notably through the red text upon the bezel of the timepiece.

Lest we forget, one of the flagship releases at this year’s Baselworld event was also a TAG Heuer Monaco watch, namely the TAG Heuer Monaco V4 (see left). Obviously, the Monaco Grand Prix is at the very centre of TAG Heuer’s workmanship, and even though this year’s race may be over there is still a vast range of Monaco inspired watches available within our stocks here at Banks Lyon. No other watches capture the essence of this high speed duel more successfully, so if you’d like more information about our complete collection of Monaco watches then contact our professional team by calling 01524 38 48 58 or emailing [email protected] today.
