SIHH Release: TAG Heuer Jack Heuer Edition Carrera 1887 Chronograph Watch

Just released this morning at the SIHH show in Geneva, and to celebrate the 50th year of the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera watch, is the TAG Heuer Jack Heuer Edition Carrera 1887 Chronograph.

In this fantastic edition of this classic watch the honorary Chairman of TAG Heuer, Mr Jack Heuer, is celebrated. The watch, inspired by the two-part construction of Heuer stop watches that Mr Heuer used to used on pro racing circuits around the world marks the beginning of a year that will celebrate 50 years of the celebrated Carrera model.

Though based upon a vintage time piece the technical details are all leading-edge, with elements borrowed from Formula One and aeronautics: black titanium carbide steel bezel, hand-brushed and polished to a high sheen; polished, fine brushed and sandblasted steel and titanium cage; tachymetre and pulsometre on the dial.

The innovative asymmetrical case design is based on the Carrera Mikrogirder 10,000 winner of the prestigious “Aiguille d’or” at the Grand Prix d’horlogerie de Genève. The case slightly rises at an angle at the top, where the crown and chronograph pushers are located, another feature that nods to the old fashioned stop watches of old.

“In every way, a stunning tribute to the singular vision of a pioneer in technology and design.”

Jack Heuer’s coat of arms and signature decorate the smoked sapphire caseback, through which can be seen the audacious 39-jewel Calibre 1887 movement.

“This coat of arms symbolises for me the entrepreneurial spirit that has been the driving force now for over 150 years of our company.”

— Jack Heuer, TAG Heuer Honorary Chairman grandson of the brand’s founder and company CEO

The movement is the stunning Calibre 1887; an integrated column wheel watch movement that vibrates 28,800 times per hour and has a 50 hour power reserve.

Among its 320 components, is an daringly re-engineered version of its inspiration, the brand’s 1887-patented oscillating pinion, along with a matching blue column wheel. The oscillating pinion, patented in 1887 by Edouard Heuer, works in tandem with the column wheel, in much the same way as an automobile transmission. The column wheel, which coordinates the start, stop and return-to-zero functions of the chronograph hand, functions like a gearbox; the oscillating pinion works like a clutch.

The technical spec for this watch is most impressive:
