The Cartier Tank Assemblage – Which is Your Favourite?

Many watches could stake a claim to the title of ‘timeless’, but only a very few could defend that claim in the face of all comers. We all have our preferences, yet some timepieces indubitably stand at the top of the tree with regards to sheer style. The Telegraph certainly has a fair bit to say on the subject, and their recent article entitled ‘The Forever Watch’ comes to some interesting conclusions.  The Cartier Tank is one of their eternal style icons, but when we see that assertion, we’re tempted to ask the question ‘which Tank?’ There are, after all, many variations, so which is your favourite?

Tank Anglaise

The Tank was introduced in 1917, and the clean, crisp lines of this horological icon were an instant success. The Cartier Tank Anglaise was viewed as a rather unexpected departure when it came into the fold though, as the side-mounted winding mechanism was secreted within the casing, leaving just the upper and lower extremities exposed. The form was also emboldened and reinforced too.

Tank Louis Cartier

As the variation of the Tank that graced the wrist of Louis Cartier himself, the Cartier Tank Louis could legitimately stand at the zenith of the Tank family, if such a distinction could indeed be made. In accordance with Louis Cartier’s own fondness for Art Deco, the lugs of the Tank Louis range have been rounded off, which is a subtle, yet significant, nod to the style choices of the great man himself.

Tank Américaine

The Cartier Tank Américaine is one of the most obviously different Tank watches out there, as the proportions of the original wristwatch have been moulded into a drastically elongated form and given a much more prominent curve. Rounded edges also sit alongside stark lines with greater regularity, making this timepiece one for the connoisseur seeking a contemporary re-imagination.

Tank Française

Often, it is the casing of a wristwatch that garners the most attention, but that doesn’t have to be the prevailing pattern. The Cartier Tank Française made its own unique statement within the Tank family by introducing a chain-link bracelet, and something that many people miss is just how seamlessly the case and bracelet are intertwined. An all-new Tank, but worthy of the name.

Tank MC

The Tank collection is beloved by both men and women, but the Cartier Tank MC showcases a more masculine demeanour using a bold and enlarged case design. Combining power and elegance, other complications like a small seconds counter are present upon certain models, yet these adjustments haven’t detracted from the fact that this is still, most definitely, rooted in the classic Tank spirit.

Tank Solo

The Cartier Tank Solo is an aptly named assemblage, as this modern classic brought a plethora of variations with it when it was released. Simply by virtue of the various metals, colours and patterns that the range incorporates, each Tank Solo does appear to stand on its own, yet the signature aesthetic of the Tank has remained in its pure form. No wonder it was so enthusiastically accepted.

We honestly couldn’t choose our favourite Cartier Tank, but we’re very firmly behind the notion that the family is truly timeless. Fast forward decades into the future, and we’d be astonished if the Tank wasn’t still turning heads, just like it has done in all the years since its inception.
