The Finer Details: Know Your Watch Numbers

normal numerals

When you’re selecting a watch there are certain factors that you’ll immediately factor into your decision process: the colour, size and movement are all examples of features that almost everybody will consider. However, if you want a timepiece which feels absolutely perfect in every sense then you also need to consider the minute details which will contribute towards the overall look and feel of the watch.

One such detail is the font – the way that the numerals are presented. As well as being an aesthetic consideration, this can also be a surprisingly practical concern: for different people, different ways of displaying the numerals can make it easier to read the watch and actually determine what the time is. You need to decide on the balance that you want to strike between style and ease of use – luckily there are many different choices out there to suit every preference.

Roman Numerals

Roman Numerals

If you like classical, heritage items then you’ll probably be drawn towards the traditional appeal of roman numerals. Generally, roman numerals give a look that is simple and reasonably understated, but still provides enough detail to make it easy to read with just a quick glance.

The examples which we’ve pictured above are typical of the style, demonstrating the luxury that often goes alongside the selection of roman numerals. The Calibre de Cartier 42mm Diver Watch (left) brings sophistication to the complex machinery of a diving watch and is currently available for £19,900, while the Cle de Cartier 35mm Steel and Pink Gold Watch is a stunning decorative item, available for £6,050 or on a 0% finance plan of £134.44 per month.

Minimalist

no numerals

If you’re happy to inspect your watch hands a little closer when you need to tell the time, you might prefer the incredible elegance of watches such as the Georg Jensen Vivianna Small Bangle Watch pictured above (left), which don’t give any numerals at all. The sheer simplicity of this style gives it a striking appeal, and with the Vivianna currently on sale for £1,995.00 or on a finance price of £53.16 per month, it certainly could be an interesting addition to your collection.

Alternatively, watches which subtly mark the key times, such as this G-GUCCI YA125515, can give the perfect compromise – pick this watch up for £2,400.00

Stylised Numbers

If you just want ordinary numbers, you don’t have to worry about them being boring, as most brands choose to use stylised fonts which perfectly complement the design of their watch. In the case of this Bremont ALT1-C Watch, the rounded digits stand out well against the cream background while also reinforcing Bremont’s image as a traditional brand. At Banks Lyon we are currently retailing this watch for £4,395.00, or on a finance plan of £97.67 per month.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Longines HydroConquest Automatic 41mm Watch, with stretched out numbers that really jump out from the dial’s background. This stretched style is increasingly popular for those who want to make more of a statement, and at just £790.00 the Longines watch is a great choice.
