The Omega Spacemaster Z-33

It’s no wonder this watch has caused a stir since its unveiling at Basel 2012; its case shape for one cannot be mistaken for any other watch on the market! Yet the Z-33 is not all about looks… it has some highly sophisticated features that make this watch a real feat of engineering.

Based on the legendary ‘Omega Pilot’s Line’ Flightmaster 1969, the Omega Spacemaster Z-33 combines a classic and instantly recognisable design with a brand new multifunction quartz movement. It separates day-to-day timekeeping from its professional functions using state of the art technology developed by the Swiss brand.

Designed with pilots in mind the Z-33 features a black LCD screen with red segments illuminated by the LED backlight which adapts automatically to ambient luminosity. The legibility, even at night, is impressive with the luminescent material on the large white hour and minute hands and hour markers on the dial. The new design incorporates skeletonised hands to help the wearer view the digital displays below them. By simply depressing the pusher at the 8 o’clock position, the hands are disengaged to either 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock, allowing the wearer an unobstructed view of the digital information.

This watch has an impressive range of digital functions that compliment the analog hour, minute and second hands, and are all controlled by the crown at 3 o’clock and a further four pushers positioned around the case. Among these are UTC plus two time zones (in 12 hour or 24 hour display), an alarm, a date and a perpetual calendar. For time measurement there is a chronograph function and a countdown timer. A nifty feature is that the case back is fixed in place with four screws and its “double wall” construction acts as a resonance chamber, thus amplifying the sound of the alarm.

As if that wasn’t enough this clever watch also has a professional pilot function that enables the wearer to log up to ten flights and visualise those logs with date-hour indications.

This ultra modern looking timepiece is manufactured from grade 5 titanium and features brushed, polished and sandblasted highlights – features all reminiscent of Omega’s original pilot case design. As is a recurring theme nowadays the case back features the Omega Seahorse emblem, the trademark ‘Ω’ and the word ‘Speedmaster’, as well as the watch’s serial number.

The Z-33 is fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides to provide a clear view of the display regardless of the conditions. The watch is water resistant to 30 metres / 100 feet / 3 bar. It also has a non-reflective matt black dial with white OMEGA name and logo and featuring the words “Spacemaster” and “Z-33” in white.

The Z-33 is supplied with a black rubber strap with ‘Omega’ and ‘Speedmaster’ detailing. However, it is also available on a brown. Both the rubber strap and the leather strap feature a model-specific titanium folding clasp; both clasps bear the Omega logo.

The watch is delivered in a special presentation box which includes a detailed manual.
