No tour of London’s museums would be complete without a visit to the Science Museum, and in a recent trip to the capital we were absolutely delighted to find that they are now housing The Clockmaker’s Museum, with an impressive collection of watches and clocks.

If you find yourself in London then this is an absolute must-see, as anybody with a strong interest in clocks and watches will be held captivated by the history of British watches and a wealth of information about their inner workings.

While the incredible work of the high profile Swiss manufacturers is certainly more suited to contemporary needs, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth looking back over the skills and manufacturing methods that were developed and honed in London during that time – and the inclusion of a model clockmaker’s workshop as well as a toolkit full of assembly pieces served as a welcome reminder of just how much work and precision goes into making a perfect timepiece, whether historically or in the modern world.

Although the relatively small size of the overall exhibition may leave some wanting more, it also ensured that there was no danger of being overwhelmed by too much information and allowed space to simply admire or reflect upon the exhibits that were included.

We certainly recommend that all budding horologists pay a visit to what was ultimately a well thought out and intriguing exhibition covering a topic which is rarely explored in such detail and, with many other fascinating exhibitions on display the Science Museum makes for a fantastic London day out.
