Tag Heuer Monaco – What to expect in 2010…

First we had the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12, in black and blue, to get us talking Monaco watches again.  Then came the Limited Edition 40th Anniversary Steve McQueen Tag Heuer Monaco with its perforated strap and missing ‘TAG’ on the dial. Now we have a ‘two for one’ situation!

Next, let’s talk Tag Heuer Limited Edition Gulf.  Only 2500 watches have been made in the style of the Porsche Gulf 917K, driven by Steve McQueen in Le Mans with a grey, blue and orange ‘meteor’ dial. At the 6 O’clock position (above the date) is the Vintage “Gulf” logo and a stylish grey alligator strap with grey stitching.  If you’re not going to go blue dial calibre 12, then this is the next best option for those wanting a little ‘McQueen Magic’ on the wrist!  It’s looking like they will all be gone by Christmas, so I’d recommend not hanging around…

Next on the table for discussion is a former 360 concept piece, brought into realization as the TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 LS. LS stands for Liner System and refers to the seconds counter at the 3 O’clock position which appears to be a sliding bar (but is actually a clever use of a wheel with a diagonal line on it in the movement!)  This watch has some of the futuristic sex appeal that we’ve seen on recent Grand Carrera models, yet the design is solidly chronographic and has managed to avoid becoming gimmicky and impractical. The bracelet version features an interesting micro-adjustment devise.  It’s a wheel that can be turned to adjust the fit of the bracelet instantly – a feature I’m eager to test on its September launch!  Preorders are already being taken.

Finally, I was digging around trying to get more info on the Monaco 24 Concept Chronograph (which is probably one for a year or two release date – if ever) when I discovered a January launch date scheduled for the Tag Heuer 150th Anniversary Monaco V4, which looks something like this….

This Tag Heuer watch will be released to celebrate the brands 150th Anniversary and watch making heritage.  It will feature a unique movement part driven by a ‘belt’ mechanism inspired by the V$ engine.  The case will be fashioned from Platinum, it will have a stunning presentation case and unsurprisingly will be limited to 150 pieces worldwide.  Exact numbers aren’t out yet, but the price tag is likely to be in excess of £100,000.00

If you would like more information, to purchase the limited edition Gulf, pre order the Calibre 12 LS or want to be the first to hear more about the V4…then email [email protected] complete our online enquiry form, call on 01524 381020 or use Boldchat.

Described by Longines as “profoundly sporty”, Longines HydroConquest watches pay respect to those who have dedicated their lives to conquering the open seas. Being the ultimate divers watch, HydroConquest watches adhere to the firm requirements demanded by diving professionals all over the world. Not only does this Longines watch demonstrate outstanding performance and durability, but also elegance and chic making it an impressive dress watch.

This range of Longines watches pride themselves in being water-resistant to 300m, possessing a screw-down case and screw-in crown offering lateral protection. HydroConquest watches also have a double security clasp with an integrated diver’s extension piece.

One of the ladies versions of the HydroConquest (Model number: L3.647.4.16.6) sports a round stainless steel case and bracelet with a single layer of anti-reflective coating on the underside. The dial is white with and oversize “12” and “6” and the indices are luminescent, to match the hands which are also silvered.

The HydroConquest automatic gents watch (Model number L3.649.4.96.6) is similar to that of the ladies model, however, endeavours a self winding mechanical movement as oppose to quartz, giving an impressive 38 hours of power reserve. The dial is “sunray” blue and the bracelet is stainless steel.

Recent reviews of the Longines HydroConquest watches prove that they are reliable and more than just a physical composition, but a well-designed watch incorporating practical features as well as attractiveness. Watches from Tag Heuer are renowned for their sport and chronograph watches, not forgetting the Tag Heuer Monaco watch worn by Steve McQueen in Le Mans in the 1969 blockbuster. However, I feel that not enough emphasis is put on the ladies collection of Tag Heuer Aquaracer watches that happen to be stunning, fashionable and most of all, a fine Swiss timepiece.

The Tag Heuer Aquaracer watch, model number WAF1414.BA0823 is a divers watch, which has battery quartz movement, in common with a number of other Tag Heuer Aquaracers. To add to the femininity of the watch, the dial is white mother of pearl and boasts super scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass. It has date and calendar functions and is water resistant up to 300m. This model combines sport and elegance, so perfect for keeping track of a hectic lifestyle. Designed specifically for divers, this ladies Aquaracer is durable and well as a striking timepiece.

The Tag Heuer Women’s Aquaracer Diamond Accented watch, model number WAF141B.BA0813, has a slightly more striking design with more feminine features. It has a pink mother of pearl dial, which is set with 10 diamond hour markers, not forgetting the stationary diamond enhanced bezel. The water resistance and durability of this watch is similar to that of the previous model (WAF1414.BA0823).

If you are thinking of buying one of these Tag Heuer Aquaracer watches I would highly recommend them. They are sustainable and sturdy as well as being an exquisite wristwatch. Personally I would choose the Diamond encrusted version of the watch, purely because of the pink dial and the diamonds, as after all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend! Many believe that a watch is built to last a life time, and if that is what you’re looking for, definitely consider the Tag Heuer Aquaracer collection.

In 1884, in St Imier, a small town in Switzerland, Leon Breitling first opened his workshop to specialize in making chronographs and precision counters, hence the birth of the Breitling watch. Since then, Breitling has produced high quality watches, many specifically designed for pilots and aircrews.

The Breitling Superocean Range, commonly referred to as “King of the Seas” was developed in the 1950’s to assist military and professional divers. Today’s Superocean watches can be water proof up to an astounding 2000 meters and have become a firm favourites with both professional and leisure divers. Each Superocean model has superior technical qualities which have contributed to the Breitling watches’ reputation. All Breitling Superocean models are made with self-winding movement: chronometer-certified Breitling Calibre 17.
The Breitling Superocean Steelfish model is the model which can boast the astonishing 2000 meter water resistance. The Steelfish is a real departure from type, as the majority of Breitling watches have rather average water resistance; the designs influenced by aviation rather than the nautical.  To make sure the pressure seal lives up to its name, the Breitling Steelfish is fitted with a security valve, ensuring the pressure is evenly balanced both inside and outside the watches case. The lines of the case are highlighted by the contrast of polished and satin-brushed surfaces and the elaborate dial is decked with circular hour markers and oversized hands, making reading the time even easier.

The Breitling Superocean Heritage model has recently been updated with the release of the Superocean Heritage Chronographe. As a tribute to the original model, the Heritage Chronographe version’s dial still carries the distinguished letter “B” in 18ct gold.  The choice of wristbands for this model are one of the main talking points, as aside from the Sporting Ocean Racer rubber strap, (available in three different colours, matching the dial and bezel,) there is also the option of the popular Ocean Classic (or ‘Heritage’) woven steel bracelet.  The Breitling Superocean Heritage Chronographe has a water resistance of up to 200 meters and comes highly recommended!

The Rally 1000 Miglia, (meaning Rally 1000 miles) is a vintage and classic car race which is part of the European Rally Championship and has been held since 1977. It was in 1988 when Chopard started to actively sponsor the race and became their official timekeeper. The Mille Miglia Gran Turismo collection of Chopard watches links together the mechanical engineering of both automobiles and watches through passion, performance and precision.

The Chopard Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL Chrono watches possess an automatic movement as well as maintaining a power reserve for 46 hours. The chronograph function (as is traditional) records up to 12 hours of elapsed time and features second, minute and hour counters. The instantaneous date display at 3 o’clock is emphasized through a magnifying optic in the sapphire crystal glass.

The case of this Mille Miglia model is available in 18 carat rose gold (limited edition) or in stainless steel as standard.  As with many of Chopard’s designs, the attention to detail is extraordinary, including such decoration as the minute track engraved on the dial. The case back is transparent to reveal the movement, but made reassuringly from scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

A variety of straps and buckles are also available, meaning that the Gran Turismo XL Chrono can be fashioned to your personal tastes. A hand stitched crocodile strap in brown or black is available, as is a Barrenia Mille Miglia style brown strap.  Of course, with its strong automotive heritage, the majority of Mille Miglia models sport the detailed black rubber Dunlop tyre tread strap – a modern design classic. There is a selection of buckle options as well, however we recommend the deployment clasp, with its dual push button release for added peace of mind.

The Chopard Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL Chrono (2008) has a limited edition model in rose gold (model number 161268-5003) with only 500 pieces available worldwide. Therefore anyone fortunate enough to own a Gran Turismo XL Chrono, without doubt, wears on their wrist and classic piece of Chopard history.

This is a review of the Cartier Santos 100 Carbon watch collection, by Charlotte.

In 2009, Cartier is releasing a brand new range of watches, to add to the Santos de Cartier range. The new Santos 100 Carbon watches by Cartier boast black dials and sapphire crystals and an impressive water resistance to 100m. Cartier have been manufacturing watches for more than 150 years, which started famously with the friendship between the Brazilian aeronaut Alberto Santos Dumont and Louis Cartier himself, bringing to life the original Cartier Santos collection of watches.

Launched this month (June 2009), the Santos 100 Carbon Chronograph in plate steel (model number W2020008) possesses a satin finish titanium case and a luxurious black toile de voile strap for extra comfort. The mechanical movement of this Cartier watch is an automatic winding Calibre 8630, and the matte finish titanium bezel Roman numerals. Following the current design of the Santos 100, the Santos 100 Carbon is chronograph with date. With its sword shaped hands and titanium push buttons, this Carbon 100 is a more fashion conscious development of the Santos 100, still appropriate for the office, but now equally appropriate for casual wear.

Â

Also launched this month, the large model of the Cartier Santos 100 watch, with titanium (model number W2020010), is almost identical to the Chronograph model in style, with its sword shaped hands and roman numerals, of which all 12 are shown on this Santos 100. However, this Carbon watch operates using the Cartier Calibre 049 movement. This Cartier watch is much more traditional and would make a monumental addition to any watch collection, as well as being a unique every day time keeper.

Finally for the ladies, the medium Santos 100 Carbon watch in pink gold (model number W2020007) is feminine and charming, and with its black toile brossee strap and Calibre 076 movement, this Cartier watch is magnificently eye catching. It also features a pink gold bezel and the Roman numerals in also in pink gold. The pink gold is created by a special blending of other elements in the alloy to achieve the desired shade. Coloured gold is becoming very fashionable at the moment, bringing me to think that this particular Cartier watch is going to be swiftly added to many collections when it is released for sale in November 2009!

The following Cartier Santos 100 Carbon watch variations are available:

Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Medium Model in steel: Model Number W2020008
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Medium Model in pink gold: Model number W2020007
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Large Model in steel/titanium steel: Model number W2020010
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Large Model in pink gold: Model number W2020009
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Chronograph in titanium/steel: Model number W2020005
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Chronograph in titainium/pink gold/steel: Model number W2020004
Cartier Santos 100 Carbon Chronograph in pink gold (one shot): Model number W2020003

The great and the good of the North West of England helped to raise over £7,000 for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and nearly £500 for Over Wyresdale Parish Church, at the second Breitling at Banks Lyon Abbeystead Clay Pigeon Shoot, which took place on Saturday 25th April 2009.

His Grace, the Duke of Westminster attended the event, as did members of some of the best known business families in the region, to enjoy a spectacular clay pigeon shooting competition on the His Graces magnificent, and normally very private, Abbeystead Estate, all organised by Lancaster and London Marketing and PR Firm, Samuelson Wylie Associates.

The shooting part of the event was organised by the Hon. John Cavendish of Cavendish Sporting, and attracted teams of shots from across the North West. Each team of four were tested against some extremely challenging clays and even had the opportunity to bring down remote controlled aircraft with their shotguns.

After lunch, Ben Samuelson conducted an auction to raise money for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust where the lots varied from magnificent shooting days on local estates through to tickets for an England rugby match and a Lancaster special edition Breitling watch

The Duke of Westminster made the awards to the winners of the shoot, the Preston-based Milkshakers, who consisted of Jonathan Simpson, Nicola Pattison, Matthew Marsden and Peter Halshaw . In the draw amongst the top ten teams on the day the Lune Valley Guns team picked up the Breitling Chrono Avenger M1 watches courtesy of principal sponsors Breitling and Banks Lyon Jewellers of Lancaster.

Additional sponsors Stratstone Ferrari sent up two gleaming new sports cars for the event and CCM provided their latest all terrain vehicle which helped maintain the shooting stands with provisions throughout the day. Royal Westmoreland, Barbados gave a Caribbean flavour to the event when they served everyone who had finished shooting with rum and cokes. Manson Insurance, together with Stratstone Ferrari and CCM, took it one stage further and actually competed.

Rodney Banks-Lyon, MD of the eponymous Banks Lyon Jewellers said the day was a huge success.

Lancashire is one of the great shooting regions of the country and an event like this fits perfectly. The standard of shooting was very high but best of all people really seemed to be enjoying themselves, and a decent sum was raised for a very worthy cause.

Rodney Banks-Lyon, Keith Sykes, Nigel Fairbrother, John Wright, Edward Metcalfe and Franz la Ros (Managing Director of Breitling UK).

Our greatest thanks go to His Grace, the Duke of Westminster, as well as the staff and tenants on his beautiful estate who were all incredibly supportive, Samuelson Wylie for organising such a superb day, as well as our sponsors and all those at the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust who made the event possible.

Edward Hay, Director at the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, welcomed the event onto the shooting calendar.

The atmosphere was amazing from start to finish and we were delighted at the way it has raised our profile in Lancashire, as well as the money raised which will go towards our use of science to promote game and wildlife management as an essential part of nature conservation, he said.

It was a superb event and our sincere thanks go to everyone involved.

Phil’s Review of the new Sweetie Watch from Links of London

The Sweetie Silver Jewellery Collection from Links of London has enjoyed massive popularity over the last few years.  Their flagship product being the Sweetie Charm Bracelet, supported by an extensive range of collectable charms as well as the Sweetie Earrings, Necklace and Rings.

Now Links of London have extended the collection beyond jewellery into the realms of the wrist watch.  The Sweetie Watch collection was announced in March at the Basle Fair and prompted immediate international interest.  Links of London have planned for a May/June launch, however the demand for these watches has already outstripped supply, with retailers who have never sold Links of London watches clamoring to stock the fashionable timepieces.

The collection itself will initially be comprised of 9 distinctive designs, which have been created to accompany and enhance the Silver, Gold and Rhodium Sweetie Jewellery designs.  The Sweetie watches will be available in Steel, Gold Plate, Black PVD and a Rose Gold Plate.  The dials will be inlaid with Mother of Pearl, coloured either Black, White or Pink, and some versions will be available with diamonds set into the case.  There is already talk of coloured sapphire designs joining the collection and of a diamond encrusted variation with 450 stones set across the dial, case and bracelet.  Because the collection is styled after the admired Sweetie Bracelet, the watches are available in Small, Medium and Large wrist sizes.
The launch prices range from £295 for the steel version, to £950 for the Steel and Sapphire/Diamond version, with the Gold & Rose Gold Plated models at £350 and the Steel & Diamond version at £650.

Here at Banks Lyon Jewellers we suspect that the surprise inclusion of the Rose Gold Plate Sweetie Watch is a sign that Rose Gold Sweetie Jewellery may soon follow!  If a new collection of Rose Gold Sweetie Bracelets and accessories becomes available it is likely to happen before Christmas 2009 – although Links of London are keeping their cards very close to their chest…

The Basle fair is over for yet another year and we felt it was only good and proper to let you all know about the new releases that will shortly be appearing here at Banks Lyon. Rolex as ever were causing a stir. There wasn’t even a whisper of the new model GMT however, the new model  Submariner Date and the two new DateJust‘s are all worth a mention:

The new Submariner, 116613 LB, has the same 40mm case as it’s predecessor. With a new ceramic bezel,  oyster bracelet and glide lock clasp. The changes are minimal but effective.

The iconic Datejust, has two new additions to it’s ranks firstly a new 41mm case. This new larger case is available in yellow and white rolesor is only available with an 18ct fluted bezel and oyster bracelet. With some this is a controversial move as many Rolex lovers feel the fluted bezel looks best with the jubilee bracelet and that the domed bezel suits the oyster bracelet best. Non the less this new model with it’s own unique dial design collection, the – now as standard – easy link oyster clasp extension and 48 hour power reserve is breaking new ground.

The other additon to the datejust family is the new adaptations to the 36mm. This size, which until now has been deemed a gentleman’s watch, has been redesigned with the lady in mind. The new collection consists of eight models in rolesor with diamond set bezels and a new distinctly feminine dial collection. Here at Banks Lyon opinions are mixed towards these new dials, flowers are the rather distinctly feminine addtion with dials in pink, grey, blue and green and of course Mother of Pearl diamond dot dial.

The 36mm datejust has certainly not left the rehelms of the gentleman’s waterproof dress watch, for many it is still the perfect case size. Due to the fashions of the age Rolex have simply acknowledged the growing trend amongst women to wear a larger watch bringing the 36mm into a unisex catergory.

Fear not though chaps, there is the 41mm if you do feel slightly demasculated every time your good lady borrows your datejust for the day!

Back to the fair and Omega had the Ploprof 1200M to talk about. A rather definate nod to the famous 1970’s original model, the first released solely for the diving professional. The watch gets it’s rather unusual name from the french ‘PLOngeur PROFessionnell’, which ofcourse when translated simply means ‘professional diver.’

After a quick glance at this watch you may question the distinct lack of a Helium Expulsion Valve (HEV) which in todays market is a clear indication of a divers watch. The Ploprof preceded research into the HEV and instead relies solely on it’s water seals at depth however fear not as the original design undertook 4 years of extensive testing with the American Diving Research centre deeming it ‘more water tight than a submarine!’

Those who use the ploprof are following in the footsteps of the must loved historical figure, Jacques Cousteau who used this watch when conducting his famous research into man’s physical and psychological capabilities at depts of 500m. Anyone whos dabbled in the sport of diving is aware of the effects of the dreaded benz and the ploprof comes equipped to help any diver avoid the unpleasant effects of ascending too quickly. The rather inviting red button on the right hand side of the case is a lock mechanism for the bezel. For every 100m ascended a diver must pause for 5 minutes to adapt to the pressure change, this lock ensures the divers don’t miscount those rather important minutes and fall foul to the effects of such actions.

A quick break down of the watch:

‘Shark’ proof metal link bracelet
Waterproof to 1200m (the original was to 600m)
Calibre 8500 movement
Bi-directional rotating bezel and security push button lock
Screw down and protected crown

Breitling threw yet another fabulous party – they have become THE party to attend – and heralded the arrival of the Navitimer 125 and  Calibre B01 movement…

….and last but by no means least, TAG detailed their new Monaco 40th Anniversary re-edition.

The original that was released in 1969 simultaneously in both Geneva and New York, was launched into iconic status by Steve McQueen who wore the watch famously in the 1971 film ‘Le Mans’. The Monaco, with it’s calibre 11 movement was the first commerically available automatic chronograph watch.

This new model has the blue dial and red dial hands as seen in the Steve McQueen special edition, and the same 38mm case as the original model. This 40th Anniversary re-edition has a calibre 11 movement, unlike the other additional Monaco releases which now all have a calibre 17 movement.

The watch is due for release in June and with only 1000 examples being produced it is going to be a struggle to secure one. The good news is, Banks Lyon have been promised at least one example and are accepting pre-orders!

Phil’s Review of Rolex Datejust Watches – including the New 41mm Datejust II & New Diamond Set Datejust 36mm:

On the 26th of March 2009 at the Basle Fair (Basleworld) Rolex announced the extension of the hugely successful Datejust range.  The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Rolesor.  Before exploring the new models we’ll look at the history of the range.

Of all of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual models, it is the Rolex Datejust which has proved the most popular for over 50 years.  Back in 1945 the Datejust surpassed the Rolex Date with a mechanism which allowed the date to be changed rapidly by manipulating the crown.  Rolex Datejust watches were also the first ever self winding, waterproof chronometers to show the date in an aperture on the dial.  In the current Rolex catalogue the Rolex Date watch now also features the same quick date change ability, but resides in a smaller case than the Datejust (34mm compared to 36mm.)

Over the years, the Datejust watch has continued to compete with alternative technologies and (in the words of Rolex) “the vagaries of fashion”, remaining at the forefront of premium brand sales.  Part of this success can be attributed to the many forms and guises that this versatile watch can assume.  Across the Datejust, Royal Black, Turn-O-Graph Special Edition and Ladies Datejust family there are over 300 dial variations.  There are multiple choices for Bezels, Straps, Bracelets, case sizes and the inclusion of Diamonds and other Precious Gems.  As you would expect, these watches are available in Rolex Gold (Yellow, White and Rose) as well as 904L steel.  (As a point of interest, Rolex are so proud of their steel, they treat it as if it were a precious metal.)  With such a broad selection available, the purchaser can literally customise their order to their exact tastes.

So what does the new range have to add to this legacy?  The Datejust II. This watch is made from what Rolex term ‘Rolesor’ which means a bi colour combination of steel and gold – meaning that the entire range features fluted bezels.  The Datejust II is also a larger watch than its predecessor with a case size of 41mm (compared to the Datejust 36mm,) and is available on the Oyster Bracelet.

Also we have the new Rolex Datejust 36mm.  This watch is also a larger version than the 26-31mm watches we have seen before and features the same ‘Rolesor’ combination of 904L steel and Rolex Gold.  The bezel features a full circle of individually cut brilliant diamonds and the dial comes in four distinctive and colourful shades.  Perhaps the most striking feature of the dial is its embellishment with a flower & star motif; a departure from traditional designs and a further move of artistic expression as seen in previous ‘Special Edition’ releases.

New and interesting designs include the Royal Pink and the Datejust Everose.  The Royal Pink emulating the Royal Black (116189 / 116199) with a dial set with waves of diamonds and a bezel of baguette cut diamonds.  The case is made of Rose Gold and the leather & rubber strap is available with or without diamonds inlaid.  The Datejust Everose comes complete with a Diamond Bezel, Mother of Pearl Dial, Rose Gold Case and a White Leather Strap.

The majority of these new watches (Datejust II / Ladies Datejust 36mm / Datejust Everose & Royal Pink) won’t become available for public sale until late October 2009, and demand is likely to be high enough to outstrip supply.  We already have orders placed for these great new watches (only a few days after their release,) should you wish to be added to our waiting list then please email [email protected] and specify which models you would like to order.

Phil’s Review of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona:

Since its first production in the early 1960’s the Rolex Daytona has undergone a major change in popularity; in the late 1980’s it was discontinued and now it is a favoured design.  The newer version has grown in size and gained a unique ‘all-Rolex’ movement, which has been standard since 2000.  Now the Cosmograph Daytona is famed for being extremely difficult to get your hands on.  In particular the Steel Daytona with white dial (116520) has become almost legendary for its rarity – indeed some Rolex Dealers will only see one or two Daytona watches over a period of a year.

Writing this has made me sit down and think hard about why the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has reached such an iconic status.  Fortunately I have worked with a large number of these watches as we enjoy a preferred stockist status – so I feel able to approach the subject from experience.

The Cosmograph movement combines the functionality of a Chronograph (used for recording the passage of time – in other terms a stop watch,) and a Tachometer (used to measure an average speed over a given distance.)  This combination was clearly designed with racing in mind, and with the name ‘Daytona’ it isn’t much of a leap to realise that it was motor racing.  The Daytona Cosmograph is the only Rolex watch that has the Chronograph function.  The ‘graduated tachometer’ markers are etched into the bezel, and three totalizer sub dials are present on the face.  This is a design classic, and if you’re looking for a reason why most non-owners can recognise this watch you’ve found it.  It is a simple, attractive and above all functional watch face.

Supporting the ‘look’ is an impressive list of clever Rolex technologies; 904L Steel, Parachrome Hairspring, Triplock Winder, Easylink Bracelet, etc.  Without needlessly immersing ourselves in technical specifications we can explore the benefits.  It is a hardy watch, made from toughened highly scratch resistant materials, which are designed to be immersed in water to depths of up to 100M (thanks to screw down crown and buttons.)  Those seeking accuracy can rest assured that this is (as with all Rolex Watches) a Chronometer rated watch, each tested by the Swiss Horological Institute in extreme conditions to prove their time keeping ability.   The sheer quality of construction and materials are beyond world class.

What most don’t seem to realise is the extent of the Daytona Watch range, with so much focus on the Steel Daytona other variations are often overlooked.  There are Steel & Gold, Gold, White Gold, Rose Gold, Diamond and Precious Stone versions, on Bracelets and Leather Straps, with a selection of Mother of Pearl and Diamond dials.  There is even a unique ‘Leopard’ version, featuring ‘Leopard Print’ Dial & Strap with cognac baguette (orange) sapphires in the bezel and diamonds on the case and dial (116598 SACO.)  I have worn this watch, and whilst it may appeal to quite individual tastes, it does look much more appealing on the wrist than in the box.

Rene-Paul Jeanneret is arguably regarded as the most influential executive at Rolex Geneva during the company’s most fruitful period in the 1950s and 1960s. It was he that came up with the idea of “tool” watches, just to clarify that is the idea of specific watches designed for participants of specific sports or activities. This influence bore fruit at the Basle watch fair in 1954 when Rolex revealed the Explorer for cavers, the Submariner for Divers and the Turn-O-Graph for International business men that wanted a low key business like watch with time elapse facility.

The story goes that Pan-Am approached Jeanneret and asked him to produce a watch that would enable pilots to track two different time zones.  The Rolex GMT Master was about to be conceived, based upon the Turn-O-Graph watch but with an additional 24 hour driving wheel and hand. This new Rolex GMT Master was the first Rolex watch to incorporate a “Cyclops”*  lens from it’s introduction.
The “Cyclops” lens is a bubble magnifier over the date which enlarges the date by 2.5 times.

Due to the size of the Pan-Am fleet the majority of the first GMT Master Rolex watches were delivered to Pan-Am flight crews and are now highly sought after timepieces.

The only real difference between the Rolex GMT Master and a ROLEX EXPLORER II is the fact that the GMT Master has a rotating bezel where as the EXPLORER II has a fixed bezel.

The latest version of the GMT Master, the 116710LN model first shown at the Basel watch fair 2005.  This 116710LN model with a completely new case and movement is most recognisable to the general layman due to its ceramic bezel, the bezel is produced by an exclusive Rolex process, heated to 1000 degrees, virtually indestructible and impervious to scratches, it takes more than forty hours to produce each of these bezels. To date the 116710LN is only produced with an all black bezel, unlike it’s predecessor the 16710 which, in Stainless steel versions, had the option of an all Black bezel or half red/blue or half maroon/black, but watch this space.  Once Rolex perfect the technique we expect top see the 116710LN available with these options.
