The first Submariner watch that Rolex produced was shown at the Basel watch fair in 1954 and went on general release later that year.  The Submariner has been in constant production ever since this date and expanded over the years from a simple Stainless Steel model to the Bi-metal (Stainless steel and 18ct carat gold) and a full 18ct yellow gold model, only as recently as 2008 have Rolex introduced an 18ct white gold 116619LB Rolex Submariner with the new ceramic bezel and stronger/wider horns/shoulders.

The Rolex Submariner very quickly became an iconic watch and it’s popularity was assured when Ian Fleming dressed his fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond with a Submariner.  Indeed Sean Connery and the first three Bond’s on film all wore Rolex Submariner’s it was only the dawn of commercialisation that saw the Bond on film change to an Omega SeaMaster.

For the next forty year the Rolex Submariner has been gradually upgraded with advancements and investments in equipment by Rolex Geneva, with new movements, improved water resistance capabilities and smaller cosmetic changes to the dial and bezel, however the current model continues to bear a very strong resemblance to the 5512 or 5513 models of the early 1960s, the current 16610 is an unmistakable close relation to the very first Rolex Submariners introduced more than fifty years ago.

In 2003 Rolex commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Submariner collection with the introduction of a special commemorative green bezel, (Green being Rolex’s house colour) 16610LV.  Ever since this date we have expected Rolex to withdraw their Green bezel 16610LV model and perhaps the anticipated introduction of a new cased 16610 Steel submariner will see it’s demise, no doubt making it yet another highly collectable model.

For those who prefer their sports watches with a hint of a dress element the Rolex Submariner 16613 stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold model with a choice of black or royal blue dial and bezel should appeal.  The blue of the 16613 Submariner has always been a much stronger seller than the Black dial and bezel 16613 model.

In 2008 Rolex released the latest version of the Submariner with heavier case and shoulders and with the new ceramic bezel.  However this new design has so far only been released in 18ct yellow gold (116618) Black bezel; and for the first time in 18ct white gold (116619LV) with a new Blue ceramic bezel. The bezel is produced by an exclusive Rolex process, heated to 1000 degrees, virtually indestructible and impervious to scratches, it takes more than forty hours to produce each of these bezels. All Submariner date watches are water resistant to 1000 feet.

The current Submariner collection consists of the following models:

Rolex Submariner none date  Stainless Steel 904L            Model No: 14060M.
Rolex Submariner Date  Stainless Steel 904L.                  Model No: 16610
Rolex Anniversary Submariner Date Stainless Steel 904L   Model No: 16610LV
Rolex Submariner Date in Steel and 18ct Yellow gold.       Model No: 16613
Rolex Submariner Date 18ct yellow gold.                        Model No: 116618LB
Rolex Submariner Date 18ct white gold.                         Model No: 116619LB

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean ‘Jewellery’ Co-Axial chronograph and chronometers take Omega in more than one exciting new direction. Part of the Seamaster family, they are fully functional diver’s watches with all of the technical prowess implied by Omega’s experience making diver’s watches since the 1940s, including water resistance to 600 metres (2000 feet), a unidirectional rotating bezel and a helium-release valve to reduce the pressure. But they are also luxuriantly diamond-set, with painstaking craft worthy of the best jewellery watches. They look immensely suave and sophisticated at the most glamorous of evening events, worn on the cuff of a dress shirt or with a gorgeous gown.

Nowadays people don’t ask whether a watch is designed for a man or a woman. In 2004, when the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean range was first launched, its large sizes – 45.5 mm and 42 mm – seemed very masculine, but now women love large-sized watches, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean ‘Jewellery’ watch was designed with neither men nor women specifically in mind but is for anyone taken by its fancy. Omega’s designers have set out to make a watch that truly breaks boundaries. It is a top quality diver’s watch that will probably never be used for diving, but is a stunning talking point, a watch to be seen in. This is helping to set a new trend of diver’s watches as jewellery, an area where only a few watch companies have gone but more will surely follow.  The new model can appeal equally to a woman who wants a large, glamorous watch, or to the increasing number of men who want diamond watches.

Omega Seamaster Planet OceanModel: 222.18.42.20.01.001

The chronograph, at 45.5 mm, has a sporty air, despite its bezel of 45 sizeable diamonds totalling 2.65 carats. It has a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute recorder at 3 and a 12-hour recorder at 6, with a small date window at 4:30. The sleek, elegant chronometer comes in 45.5 mm and 42 mm diameters, the latter with 45 slightly smaller diamonds totalling 1.73 carats. All models have a black triangular dive minute marker with white Super-LumiNova dot, at 12 o’clock.

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean ‘Jewellery’ is not only one of Omega’s most striking and original timepieces, but also one of their most versatile and innovative models.

Omega James Bond Watches have been with us for quiet a while now and I’m not surprised that they are still a popular timepiece.  The introduction of Co Axial escapements have added a substantial increase in the power reserve – which is handy if you take the watch off for prolonged periods and coincidentally adds a reassuring weight to the case whilst it is on the wrist.  As a Seamaster Diver 300 M the Bond Watch is obviously designed for use in water, and carries a uni-directional bezel and a helium gas escape valve as standard.  One of the real benefits of the underwater features is actually the markers and hands on the dial, which are conveniently large and easy to read – not only this but they are also luminous in poor light or the dark.

The Omega 007 is a fine looking wrist watch, Omega haven’t needlessly over-complicated the design, the dial, bezel and strap are all simple and easy on the eye.  Some watches look good with jeans, others with a suit etc, but the James Bond watch seems to go with just about anything.  Omega themselves claim that the Seamaster  offers “Precision and Performance, whenever you want it, wherever you need it.”

I have very few criticisms for the Omega Bond Watch other than a passing disappointment that Omega hasn’t chosen to include the laser beams from the movies.

Personally I think the 007 watch is a fantastic all-rounder, perfect for everyday wear and an excellent sport watch to boot.  And who knows, maybe a bit of Bond’s luck with the ladies will rub off on us for wearing it!

TAG Heuer Monaco, 40 Years of Legend

After its scene-stealing debut on Steve McQueen’s wrist in Le Mans, the TAG Heuer Monaco, theicon of sporting glamour that captured the spirit of an era and changed the face of luxury Swiss watchmaking, remains as cutting edge and as cool as ever.

The Monaco: Avant-Garde Style and Performance, Squared
Launched simultaneously in Geneva and New York on March 3rd, 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco caught the watchmaking world by storm. The provocative look of the timepiece, with its red chronograph hand, domed crystal, metallic blue dial,  and big, squared-off case represented a complete break with the conventional codes of watch design. Equally radical was the engineering required to ensure the chronograph’s perfect water-resistance — a world first for a square-shaped timepiece. But what was ticking inside was even more revolutionary: the famous self-winding Chronomatic “Calibre 11”, the first self-winding automatic chronograph movement with microrotor, so precise it rivals to this day the exacting standards of professional chronometer instruments.

Ever since, the Monaco’s emblematic square-shaped dial has been synonymous with TAG Heuer’s innovative aesthetic. Reissued in 1998 in a limited edition of 5,000, it was entirely redesigned in 2003, refitted with a 7-row steel bracelet of square links echoing the daring aesthetics of the case. The watch became a must-have among racing purists and collectors, but it also surprised the industry by becoming the huge breakout fashion hit of the year, adored by haute couture and Hollywood.

The TAG Heuer Monaco had just been launched and so impressed McQueen that he insisted on wearing it in the film. The TAG Heuer Monaco became the preferred chronograph of the racing and fashion world.  Its unique, uncompromising geometry started a trend toward “shaped” watches. Instantly recognizable, often copied, never equaled, the “McQueen Monaco” (Model 1133B) is one of the most highly prized pieces in the international vintage markets. Demand far exceeds supply — only a handful is known to still exist, all in the hands of well-informed collectors.

The re-interpretations that followed were even more revolutionary.

THE MONACO SIXTY-NINE
The star of Baselworld 2003, the TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine Concept Watch, was presented as the first Swiss wrist-worn mechanical watch combined with a 1/1000th of a second chronograph. The brand’s first reversible, mechanical/digital watch is a  timepiece that brings together traditional and innovative in a way never seen before. On one side, the iconic, uncompromising face of Steve McQueen’s favourite watch; on the other, the distinctive, high-tech digital face of the Microtimer

Model No: CW9110.FC6177

THE MONACO V4
Presented during Baselworld 2004, the TAG Heuer Monaco V4 represents a stunning technological breakthrough.   The name V4 derives from the movement’s four barrels, which are mounted in a V shape, like cylinders in a supercharged motor-racing engine. The name also pays tribute to the movement’s inspiration: while the V4 draws from the newest concepts in industrial technology, its true muse, like the original Monaco’s, is the world of high-tech, racecar engines.

THE MONACO WATCH GRANDE DATE
The next addition to the must-have line, with a 37mm polished stainless steel case, TAG Heuer Grande Date movement, two dials in black and blue/silver, with a small second counter at 6 o’clock and diamond-shaped hands tipped in superluminova, all under curved sapphire crystal. With its elegant alligator strap and clean, architectural lines inspired by the Monaco V4 case, this watch is resolutely modern.

Model No: WW2114.FC6215

All the classic TAG Heuer Monaco attributes are there but softened by the charm of white leather, or black or brown python. The case is set off by 26 diamonds accentuating the bezel’s right angles, and the dial with a further 13 diamonds. As energetic as the original but with exquisite harmonies of tone, texture, and material for further heighten the emotive force.

THE MONACO CLASSIC CHRONOGRAPH
To celebrate the TAG Heuer MONACO’s 40th anniversary, TAG Heuer is proud to present a new collection of Classic Chronograph fitted with a TAG Heuer “Calibre 12” automatic movement, heritage of the original “Calibre 11”.
Inspired by the original design, these chronographs adorn a sapphire crystal glass and a case back allowed to see the beat of the “Caliber 12”.

Standout features include a dark blue alligator strap and stylish silver and blue dial with red hands.

THE TAG HEUER MONACO 1969 ORIGINAL RE-EDITION
1969-2009: To commemorate this historic anniversary, TAG Heuer has proudly republished this iconic blue-dial timepiece in a limited series of 1,000 pieces with an exclusive case back signed by Jack Heuer and engraved in honour of Steve McQueen. Outfitted with the Calibre 11 movement, its other classic features include pushbuttons at 2 and 4 o’clock, crown at 9, counters at 9 and 3, hand-applied date window at 6 o’clock, and diamond-tipped horizontal hours indexes.

OMEGA and Clooney – ready for spring!

Swiss watchmaker OMEGA is launching a new advertising campaign around an image of its popular brand ambassador George Clooney.

Clooney, wearing a lightweight white suit , assumes a relaxed pose against tree, with an OMEGA watch clearly visible on his wrist. In the foreground of the picture is an OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra in 18 Ct red gold with a brown alligator strap.

Omega Seamaster Aquaterra, Model: 231.53.42.21.06.001

Particularly sharp-eyed observers will notice that in the photograph, George Clooney is wearing a different OMEGA watch – an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional, another of George’s choices and the watch which established its status as a true legend forty years ago when, on the 21st of July, 1969, it became the first watch to be worn on the Moon.

The Omega Speedmaster GMT Solar Impulse watch is a numbered edition timepiece which celebrates Omega’s involvement with the “Solar Impulse” Project, whose goal is to circumnavigate the globe in a solar powered airplane–perhaps as early as 2009. Extremely aware of the importance of harnessing and creating sustainable energy sources, Omega is a proud associate of the project, supplying engineering and capital technology.

This Speedmaster watch has been designed to pay tribute to the prototype plane–which has been designated as HB-SIA (Hotel Bravo Solar Impulse Alpha). The 44.25mm case and matching bracelet are manufactured from Grade-2 titanium, as are the crown and pushpieces; the caseback is a screw-in design and is engraved with the inscription “Test Flight”. A crystal in sapphire provides outstanding protection from scratches, Water resistance of the Speedmaster Solar Impulse watch is 100 meters.

This Speedmaster GMT is animated by the exclusive Omega 3603 caliber. This self-winding movement, which has received COSC chronometer certification for its precision performance, features a chronograph governed by a column-wheel. The free-sprung balance, equipped with the friction-reducing Omega Co-Axial escapement, moves back and forth 28,800 times each hour, allowing the watch to record separate time intervals with precision to within 1/8th of a second. In addition to the chronograph functions and the supplementary GMT indicator, the movement also offers a rapidly adjustable date display. Power reserve of the 3603 caliber is 52 hours. This prestigious mechanism has been refined in the Omega GMT, with fine decorative elements, including ‘Cotes de Geneve’ and perlage.

The carbon fiber dial of this unique Omega Solar Impulse timepiece features recessed chronograph subdials; the inscription “HB-SIA” is proudly located at the 12 o’clock position, in a distinctive ochre color which matches the “Tachymetre Base 1000” printing on the aluminum bezel insert.

The Breitling Emergency Watch as worn by Brad Pitt and Bear Grylls, Since it appeared in 1995 it has saved the lives of at least 17 people.  Though very large, it needs to be to incorporate a micro–transmitter that acts as a homing beacon for SOS signals to rescuers.

The transmitter is activated by unscrewing a protective cap and pulling out the antenna within.  It will then broadcast for 48 hours a signal on the 121.5 MHz aircraft emergency frequency, with a range of about 100 miles (160 km) over calm seas or flat terrain.

Each Breitling watch comes with a no–nonsense warning that if the signal is activated without reason, you will have to pay the cost of any emergency services summoned plus half the retail value of the watch to have it reset.
