Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the start of the historic Battle of Britain, and the country came together to commemorate the landmark occasion with an awe-inspiring flypast which marked the culmination of months of separate events.
The flypast itself was an incredible sight to behold, with around 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes involved – making it the largest collection of WWII aircraft flying together since the war’s end. In a particularly touching moment, Prince Harry relinquished his own position in the flyby to ensure that a veteran pilot who found their own spitfire grounded was able to take part.
Although all eyes may have been on the pilots, the commemorative service itself laid emphasis on all the individuals who plaid a part in the battle, including nurses, radar operators and maintenance crews, as without them the pilots would not have been able to fulfil their own pivotal roles.
