Breitling releases the EMERGENCY II watch at Basel Fair 2013

“The world’s first wristwatch with a dual frequency locator beacon”

In 1995 Breitling Watch Company took a leap of faith and launched the very first wristwatch in history to be equipped with a built-in emergency microtransmitter. This highly technical feat of watch making was designed to enable rescuers to pin point the location of pilots or passengers following a plane crash. Operating on the 121.5 MHz international air distress frequency Breitling designed it to be worn by pilots as part of their uniform – so that, in theory, it would become part of the standard on-board aircraft equipment.

The success of this watch was astronomical for Breitling Watches. With more than 40,000 watches sold across the world the Breitling Emergency watch has saved a number of lives and has, therefore, proved its worth as both a wrist watch and a highly advanced piece of kit for exploration on land, at sea and in the air.

“Building on the huge success of the original model Breitling has achieved a new and unprecedented technical feat in presenting the EmergencyII.”

In what is probably the most highly anticipated new Breitling model of the past couple of years the Breitling Emergency II Watch is an extremely high-tech timepiece equipped with a dual frequency transmitter compliant with the specification of the Cospas-Sarsat international satellite alert system. This complicated and highly technical system, serves both to issue alerts and to assist in the search and rescue of those in peril.

Developed in conjunction with major scientific institutes, the Emergency II is distinguished by numerous microelectronic and microtechnical innovations, including a revolutionary, and particularly spectacular feature – a rechargeable battery. Couple this with a miniaturised dial frequency transmitter and an unprecedented integrated antenna system this watch really is quite astounding.

In this bold move Breitling has reaffirmed its pioneering role in the field of technical watches and instruments for professionals with the creation of the very first timepiece with a built in personal locator beacon (PLB).
