Usually, you’d find Nick and Giles English of Bremont labouring over their latest overly-engineered chronometer design, perhaps deciding upon the next historical theme that a Bremont limited edition is going to honour, or simply promoting Bremont watches throughout the world. In a sense then, the news that Bremont have announced an official partnership with Donington Park is no surprise; the brand had already established strong links with this iconic racing circuit. However, the double-faced, 2.5 metre bespoke Bremont clock that they’ve installed over the Donington Pit lane is certainly something a little out of the ordinary, although that unfamiliarity only makes it even more intriguing.
For the next eight years, Bremont will serve as the Official Timing Partner for Donington Park, and that status is reinforced by the presence of a clock that fits seamlessly with the aesthetics of typical Bremont watches. Although this clock is intended to grace a legendary arena that concerns motorsport, Bremont’s aviation heritage is still clearly visible by way of ‘aircraft style’ fixers alongside both the drum and bezel, so that element of Bremont’s personality is far from forgotten. Having worked alongside both Jaguar and Norton in the past though, Bremont is no stranger to automotive motifs, and so a ‘wishbone’ suspension inspired support-bracket was implemented to meld both of Bremont’s great passions into one harmonious form.
The clock was designed alongside the famous British clock maker Smith of Derby, who has been instrumental in assisting Bremont with the quartz powering of the clock; quite a departure for a horological brand that usually deals almost exclusively with mechanical timepieces. Nick and Giles English have allied with Smith of Derby in the past, and this proudly British partnership has been received with enthusiasm at Donington. The Managing Director of Donington, Christopher Tate, has stated how Bremont’s clock ideally complements the ‘aspirations of the new Donington Park’, prioritising great history and tradition as it does, and is delighted to have Bremont as a partner.
Here at Banks Lyon Jewellers, we may not be able to sell you a replica of the Donington Park clock, but we do stock a huge array of Bremont SOLO watches, which is the particular Bremont design that has served as the spiritual blueprint for this impressive clock. The SOLO assemblage draws upon the appearance of classic pilot’s watches from the 1940s in the main, and the entire range has become renowned for its remarkable legibility; an advantage that doubtlessly appealed to the team at Donington Park. The SOLO family is also one of the Bremont collections that incorporates ladies’ timepieces, so it is truly a selection to be savoured by all.
