Celebrating September with the Sapphire

Over the years, many precious metals and gemstones have acquired a variety of additional connotations and meanings, and if anything these associations have only added to the appeal of these gorgeous materials. For example, a ruby, with its distinct red colouration, might be seen to represent romance or passion, and so a piece of ruby jewellery would be judged as an ideal gift for the special person in your life. However, a good many luxury stones have also been aligned with particular months of the year, and as it’s September, the month of the sapphire, we thought that we’d showcase some sapphire jewellery in this latest post.

Sapphires have been beloved by multitudes since the Middle Ages, and they have acquired many connotations as the years have rolled by. Seen as protective or lucky talismans, symbolic of heaven,  or representative of purity – among other things – the word ‘sapphire’ derives from the word meaning ‘blue’ in several ancient languages, and interestingly these gemstones originate from the same family as the ruby. The gem species in question is known as ‘corundum’, and whilst the ruby is merely the red hue of this stone, the variety we know as the sapphire can actually occur in a bewildering multitude of dazzling tones.

Of course, the sapphire is most famous in its blue form, although the exact colour can range from shades of pure blue, and all the way to very light blue, or even blue with a distinct green or violet tinge. A stunning example of a piece of blue sapphire jewellery would be the CARAT* Sapphire Borderset Heart Pendant (see above) that we recently featured on our Facebook page. A deep blue created-sapphire sparkles at the nucleus of this sterling silver pendant, and the stone in question weighs in at 4.5 carats. Encircled by a radiant halo of cubic zirconia crystals, this piece of CARAT* jewellery is just £191, so it would make a wonderful present for anyone with a September birthday.

However, as we’ve intimated, the sapphire can occur in a sweeping cascade of rainbow hues, and our collection of sapphire gemstone rings is a fantastic indicator of that fact. For example, a breathtaking combination of blue and pink sapphires can be found clustered upon the apex of this 18ct White Gold Sapphire & Diamond Cascade Ring (see above), and few rings could be relied upon to make a stronger statement than this unique piece. Retailing at £1,695, this cascade ring can also be purchased on 0% finance for 36 monthly payments of £37.67 and a 20% deposit, so it remains an eminently accessible gift.

Similarly, sapphires also naturally arise with a yellow colouration, and a charming linear assemblage of such stones can be found upon the thin band of this 18ct Yellow Gold 0.21ct Sapphire Stackable Eternity Ring (see above). Perfect for ‘stacking’ alongside other rings – as the name implies – this superb jewellery piece is available this September for a mere £380, and would make a fantastic present to commemorate a long-lasting relationship.  Actually, sapphires can also be found in purples, greens or even oranges, so the simple moniker of ‘sapphire’ really doesn’t do justice to the sheer diversity of this wonderful family of gemstones.

Here at Banks Lyon Jewellers, you can find an abundance of fine sapphires within our vast selection of our luxury jewellery, and if you’re looking for something specific then we’ll only be too happy to help you find it.
