Omega Reinvents the De Ville Trésor

Omega is one of the oldest and most respected of all the many prestige Swiss watchmakers, and because of that their back catalogue is perhaps just as desirable as their ‘current’ collections. Omega watches have spanned so much history and heritage that these vintage timepieces never really date, and people continue to be fascinated with them. Perhaps this is why so many of Omega’s offerings throughout the course of 2014 have been reintroductions. This habit is not indicative of the fact that Omega’s inspiration is dwindling, but is instead in response to the high demand that is still evident for many classic Omega timepieces; a demand that shows no signs of waning anytime soon.

The Omega Speedmaster Mark II watch and the Limited Edition Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 Anniversary watch are both prime examples of restored Omega classics that retain all of their original charm, whilst benefitting from the addition of premium-quality contemporary engineering, but they are by no means the only 2014 timepieces that conform to this pattern. The De Ville family was another collection to receive a lot of attention at Baselworld this year, and now this new announcement has finally been realised. Named the Trésor, this De Ville is named after a 1949 timepiece that housed the incredibly venerated 30 mm calibre, and, like this predecessor, the new Trésor is equipped with the best interior engineering that Omega has to offer.

Looking at the case of the new Trésor – a mere 10.6 mm in height – it is easy to assume that nothing especially distinctive lies within, but such a deduction couldn’t be more mistaken. Reversing the timepiece to view the exhibition caseback will reveal the threefold engravings of ‘Si14’, ‘Anti-magnetic’ and ‘>15’000 Gauss’ – an indisputable indicator that the movement is one of Omega’s brand new Master Co-Axial calibre 8511 devices. The last word in terms of both mechanical precision and magnetic resistance, the inclusion of this movement means that, although the timepiece may look like a simple re-issue, it is actually so much more.

However, as a dress watch, it would be disappointing to see that Omega had tampered unduly with the iconic aesthetics of the De Ville Trésor, and so it is all the more welcome to see that they have retained so much of the traditional Trésor spirit. The case is available in three variants of gold including Omega’s signature Sedna™ material – whilst the almost ethereal silvered dial displays a ‘clous de Paris’ theme and smoothly domed indexes. Scratch resistant coating lies upon both the front and rear of the case, and the spectacle is completed with a choice of leather straps, so the Trésor remains breathtakingly beautiful, whilst now boasting some genuinely unique engineering; a formidable combination, to say the least.

Of course, we began this article by saying that Omega’s back catalogue is frequently just as in-demand as their new releases, so whilst you await the introduction of the new Trésor you can peruse a huge collection of established Omega De Ville watches right here and right now at Banks Lyon Jewellers. Representing many years of horological history and evolution, these De Ville watches are superb timepieces in their own right, and would look superb upon any wrist.
