Gents Watch of the Week: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Titanium Watch

Our Gents Watch of the Week represents the zenith of horological creation for many watch connoisseurs, as the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Titanium watch is one of the very latest incarnations in Omega’s world renowned Seamaster watch collection. Omega watches have graced the wrists of many of the original champions in the world of oceanic discovery, and historic figures such as William Beebe and Jacques Mayol have all been partnered with an Omega timepiece during their record breaking diving exploits.

Since the Omega Marine was launched in 1932, Omega has enjoyed a close relationship with the maritime industry as the premier provider of high quality diving watches, and when the illustrious Seamaster range was formed in 1948 this reputation has been confirmed with each subsequent release. The inception of the Planet Ocean line took place in 2005, and this pioneering series of timepieces has united the treasured diving heritage of Omega’s watches with cutting edge technology and stark sophistication, ushering in a new range of timeless watches.

The 42 mm case of this Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is made from the highest quality brands of titanium to maximise the lightweight durability of the model, although further choices of metal such as 18 carat gold and polished stainless steel are also used on alternative versions. These materials all coalesce to form a genuine tour de force of contemporary panache.  The case is obtainable in a range of additional sizes such as 37.50mm and 45.50mm, but one of the famed co-axial escapements that were first introduced by Omega in 1999 resides within each one, no matter what the dimensions many be. The revolutionary technology within this movement significantly reduces the wear and tear on the inner workings of the timepiece, as well as generating superior standards of precision. The balance spring within the co-axial is formed from silicon, an entirely non-magnetic element that was specially chosen by Omega for its exemplary properties of endurance and reliability.

The blue dial of this Seamaster model is a fresh direction for this fully certified chronometer, as when the new range was first launched the colour scheme was restricted to a deep and striking black aesthetic.  However the expansion of the Seamaster collection has resulted in other shades now also becoming available, with white and an instantly popular black and orange version constituting the remainder of the variety. The dial displays Super LumiNova details, meaning that it will always remain unwaveringly outlined in a clear blue light even in the dimmest of night time waters. All the indexes on the Seamaster Planet Ocean are coated with this maritime asset, with the exception of the faceted rhodium laminated minute hand and the point of the diving bezel, which instead release a green glow.

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Titanium boasts an impeccably crafted sapphire crystal that has been laboriously fashion to resist both scratching and water pressures to an astonishing 600 metres (2000 feet). The unique specifications of this crystal mean that only diamond can claim a preeminence in the area of resisting impacts and exposure to hazardous magnetic forces. The OMEGA Planet Ocean also benefits from a unidirectionally rotating bezel that has been specifically augmented to suit the challenging requirements of a deep sea environment, possessing a Liquidmetal® diving scale and a helium escape valve for optimum levels of performance.
