TAG Heuer Goes Vintage with the Carrera

The world of luxury horology is always an exciting place precisely because it never stands still, just like time itself. However, for all the attractions of innovation and contemporary complications, there’s always something inherently charming about revisiting the feats of yesteryear too. After all, watchmaking is a craft that possesses a long and storied heritage, and such a rich history should never be thrown away. That’s a fact that’s obviously been on the minds at TAG Heuer recently, as they have been hard at work expanding their iconic Carrera range with two new ‘vintage’ models.

You’d expect the forward-thinking and vibrant minds at TAG Heuer to come up with a ‘vintage’ inspired timepiece that wasn’t just a hurried rehash, and you’d be exactly right to harbour such a hope. You also wouldn’t be disappointed in this case either, as both of the two new Carrera models allow both modern sporting style and TAG Heuer’s signature heritage to intermingle at will.

On the silver and blue Carrera, the subtle use of red on the dial is designed to be a tribute to the pioneering 1963 Carrera, whilst the leather strap has cunningly been selected to complement the colour of the blue sub-dial. The TAG Heuer logo is also present in its historic form of ‘Heuer’, which is another nod to the forefathers of the Carrera family, and one that’s present upon the black and silver watch too. Likewise, both designs have a telemeter scale in addition to the standard chronograph features, so they’re imbued with a slight ‘military’ flavour that should suit modern preferences. Such a complication was once relied upon to measure artillery fire, but these days it could just as easily be utilised to calculate the distance of a thunderstorm from the wearer!

The silver Carrera possesses the twin sub-dials that were so beloved upon the venerated ‘two counter’ Carrera from the 1960s, and TAG Heuer have also taken the commendable step of releasing these Carreras in a 39mm size that’s ideally suited to the wrist sizes of both men and women. This is also more faithful to the bygone Carrera models, so you’ll doubtless see that ‘vintage’ features have been infused with a deal of modern practicality wherever possible. Intriguingly, a ‘glassbox’ has been called upon to house the movements; another historic feature that serves to make the Carrera look trimmer than ever. Completed with a ‘TAG Heuer’ engraved push-button clasp, these twin Carreras really do work wonders in terms of bridging the gap between horology past and horology present.

We’ve always loved the TAG Heuer Carrera collection here at Banks Lyon Jewellers, and we’re very taken with this pair of new arrivals.
