Baselworld 2014: A Preview

It only seems a matter of moments since the Baselworld 2013 Rolex collection was being displayed here at Banks Lyon, but already we are looking forward to the upcoming Baselworld 2014 fair with a sense of heightened anticipation. This year, Baselworld will run from March 27th until April 3rd and, whilst a number of details regarding the featured selection of watches remain top secret, there is already a noteworthy assemblage of information available to us. Baselworld is the premier showcase event within the watchmaking world, routinely attracting in excess of 90,000 visitors every spring, and all of the titans in the world of ocular horology will undoubtedly hold court during this year’s tenure.

One brand that has already been extremely vocal about its presence at Baselworld 2014 is premium Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Omega. To coincide with this year’s Baselworld fair, the Omega Speedmaster Mark II watch (see right) will be unveiled; a popular reintroduction based upon the classic 1969 model that was worn by the astronauts who reached the surface of the moon. Fully updated with the co-axial Caliber 3330 movement, a silicon balance spring and a superbly luminous tachymeter scale, this watch is a genuine first in a number of ways; even for the iconic Speedmaster name. Water resistant to 100 metres and boasting a 4 year warranty, this timepiece is rendered instantly memorable by optional fluorescent orange detailing upon the dial, and is already generating a wealth of attention.

Not content with this reimagining of a treasured classic, Omega is also releasing a ladies’ timepiece in the form of the Constellation Pluma (pictured below). This gorgeous innovation exudes femininity with an engraved mother-of-pearl dial, conforming to a unique undulating aesthetic, and also utilises a diamond encrusted bezel to great effect. In addition to this, a limited version of the Omega Planet Ocean is also being released. This is one timepiece that will certainly stand out no matter what the competition might constitute, as almost the entire watch will be crafted out of patent-pending orange ceramic. Further adorned by a 950 platinum dial, it is scarcely any wonder that this astonishing wristwatch will be limited to a mere eight pieces.

Omega has been especially active with its pre-Baselworld promotions, yet they are by no means the only brand that has already announced its machinations. Italian luxury fashion brand Gucci has also teased a trio of new timepiece ranges, including the interlocking grey PVD watch, the G-Timeless slim automatic timepiece, with its signature streamlined attraction, and also the G-Chrono 38mm in ceramic. This latter is a member of one of Gucci’s most beloved collections, and the gorgeously implemented branding upon this new version is guaranteed to cement is as a firm favourite among Gucci’s admirers. It’s not only watchmaking that is set to excel at Baselworld 2014 either, as many luxury jewellers, such as Al Coro, are also going to be in residence. All told, the weeklong fair is set to be all too brief.

Baselworld always presents an undeniable series of watch and jewellery making triumphs on a yearly basis, and many of the most exciting developments in recent months, such as the Omega Speedmaster Darkside of the Moon watch and the Breitling Emergency II watch (pictured above), were first brought to light at Baselworld 2013. After hosting the splendour of the Baselworld 2013 Rolex collection in our very own premises, we are especially excited to see what this most respected of Swiss manufacturers has in store for the 2014 show. Rolex has kept its intentions typically secretive up to this point, although rumours of potentially new timepieces, such as a triumphant return for the classic ‘Pepsi-bezel’ GMT model, continue to flow thick and fast.

Now only just over a month away, Baselworld 2014 is certain to be an unmitigated success. Here at Banks Lyon, we will be keeping an eye on all of the developments that occur in the coming weeks, and will also be bringing you all of the most exciting timepieces to grace this event when they see release.
