TAG Heuer’s Ronaldo Wins Ballon d’Or 2014

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t been a TAG Heuer ambassador for an excessively long time, but that short tenure has nonetheless been a very successful one. Naturally, such an acclaimed sportsman attracts no shortage of media attention, and that’s certainly true of late, as Ronaldo was shortlisted for the prestigious Ballon d’Or 2014 award. Every year, this FIFA award celebrates the player who is judged to have performed the best over the calendar year, and the voters who influence the final decision are drawn from national team coaches, captains and journalists. It’s a given that the competition is incredibly fierce, and this year’s candidate list included the likes of Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer. Ultimately though, it was Ronaldo who was, once again, acclaimed as the best player of the year.

In actual fact, this accolade means that Ronaldo has maintained his status as ‘world player of the year’, as he was also the winner of the 2013 award. Ronaldo defeated Messi – a previous winner of this award on four consecutive occasions – by a full 21.9% of the votes, amassing 37.66% in total. According to the BBC Sport website, Ronaldo was emotional when receiving the award, thanking the President of FIFA, and also his coach and the whole Real Madrid team for ‘an unforgettable year’. Describing the achievement of winning the Ballon d’Or as ‘incredibly unique’, Ronaldo is nevertheless also looking forward to the future, and has his sights set on breaking more records.

Speaking to TAG Heuer, Ronaldo declared that he wanted to not only win the award again, but also go down in history as ‘one of the greatest players of all time’. It’s this sort of aspiration that makes Ronaldo the ideal ambassador for TAG Heuer, as he is always striving to go further; a focus that mirrors the ethos of this famous Swiss watch manufacturer. TAG Heuer is never one to shy away from pushing the boundaries, and, if you’ve been following the latest news, this is a fact that you’ll doubtless have picked up. We are, of course, talking about the forthcoming TAG Heuer smartwatch.

Most luxury watch manufacturers are shying away from the smartwatch industry, yet TAG Heuer has stated its intentions to go head to head with technology giants such as Apple. Details are currently scarce about the exact nature of this wristwatch, but the possibility of mechanical functions is one widespread rumour, as is a fairly imminent release date. TAG Heuer themselves have suggested that a late 2015 unveiling is their intention, so perhaps we may look forward to Baselworld for additional information. One thing is certain though; both TAG Heuer and Ronaldo will doubtless continue to redefine their respective worlds in ever more impressive ways.

Although Ronaldo isn’t especially associated with any one TAG Heuer watch, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer, the TAG Heuer Carrera and the TAG Heuer Formula 1 ranges have all been pinpointed as showcasing his characteristic values in the past, and here at Banks Lyon we have a broad selection of all these families for you to peruse. It’s fair to say that the magic in Ronaldo’s feet is worthy of much acclaim, but, when wearing a TAG Heuer watch, his wrist is just as well adorned, and yours can be too.
